The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is responsible for the management of energy, mineral, and geological resources on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) of the United States. The agency balances the development of such energy, mineral, and geological resources with the environment.
The main responsibility of BOEM is the management of offshore mineral and energy leasing for the federal government. This includes all mineral extraction, oil and natural gas extraction, and offshore renewable energy development on the OCS. In addition to leasing, BOEM oversees the exploration planning and development planning processes that are required for tye development of the OCS.
The mission of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management is to manage development of U.S. Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) energy, mineral, and geological resources in an environmentally and economically responsible way.
