"The Bureau of Indian Affairs is responsible for providing vital services to over 1.9 million American Indians and Alaskan Natives. It provides support and services in economic development, natural resource management, law enforcement and justice services, irrigation, community resilience, among others. The bureau is responsible for the management of 55 million acres of land and 57 million acres of mineral estate that are held in trust for American Indians and Alaskan Natives. In all, the Bureau of Indian Affairs works with 574 federally recognized American Indian tribes and Alaska Native Villages."
The mission of the Bureau of Indian Affairs is to "enhance the quality of life, promote economic opportunities, and to carry out the federal responsibilities entrusted to us to protect and improve the trust assets of American Indians and Alaska Natives. We accomplish this by directly empowering Tribal governments through self-governance agreements."
